, this city, this team, it's speechless. >> in the spring nobody talked about us having a chance. we kept our noses in the game. every single guy stepped up. it's a huge accomplishment. we're happy to be the nl east division champs. >> we've come a long way. it's been a long year. we've done some good things. done a couple bad things but to finish on top is something i'll never forget. >> we've come a long way in a very short time. we have a long way to go. we've got a good young club. i think we should do this every year. >> playoff baseball means playoff merchandise. and this is the t-shirt that everybody wants to get their hands on this morning. there's still a few in the team store. you can buy them online. i'm hearing this morning that the baseball hats are almost out. so if you want them, you better get down here quick because you know those are going to sell out fast. mike, if you want one, if you're nice, i might try and run in and get you one before they all run out. >> if they have navy, i want one because i already have the shirt. i'm not giving this back. >> reporter: oh, you do.

to fans from either one of these cities and it's like the other guys are from some kind of foreign country. >> i don't think about the nationals. orioles fans during a recent home stand -- >> have you been to a nationals game? >> i have not. >> go nats. >> now talk to nationals fans about the orioles. >> i'm excited that these season tickets from '08 are paying off. go nats. >> and many fans oblivious to each other until now. >> we'll see the nats in the world series. go orioles. >> we clearly have the better team, the better stadium, and the better city. >> can you imagine the world series? >> i would love it. that would mean i could go to all seven games. >> some families are torn. >> i have been waiting a long time for this. >> george is old enough to remember the senators. >> it would be wonderful to see these teams doing what they are doing. >> but josh growing up with no hometown gravitated to the o's. >> he's going to have to learn to accept it when nationals beat the orioles in the world series. >> we'll see about that. it will be fun. good series. >> all right.

and hotels, everything down here. >> reporter: the fans, owners, city officials, business community, just about everybody are still waiting for the economic renaissance, the kind that followed the verizon center's construction in the heart of china town. >> you know what happened. the stadium got built. the market crashed and nothing got developed. >> reporter: in today's money this is a $660 million ballpark, one of the best in the business. they broke ground here in march of 2006. two years later they had opening day here. what's missing still are businesses to fill all of those vacant lots over there, bars, restaurants, hotels, housing units. >> we're still very optimistic. it's a timing issue. >> reporter: local lawyer mark towie led the team that negotiated baseball's return to washington and then the construction of nationals park. >> the situation the economy has been in the last few years where construction financing has not been as available, but i'm told by a number of developers it's coming very quickly now in the next few years and with it, by the way, the all-star game. >>
